Menorca

Up early for our flight to Menorca. We don't mind that it is cooler and showery, as it is a travel day. But it does seem odd that we had expected the warm, sunny weather we had in UK and we have the weather we expected for UK. The first week, spent on the southern coast of the island brought mixed weather. At times quite high winds whipped up quite a swell in the sea, but the pool at the house was used well.

The house is amazing!  We feel like we are living in luxury. Nearly every building is white - ours also inside. Means we do have to be careful, as it is also tiled throughout.
Warmer weather every day, but even the Queenslanders braved the pool. Though not the cold waters of The Mediterranean yet. Some lovely walks along the beachfront with  coffee shops and bars to stop for a break.

In so many places around the island, coves are edged with cliffs. Into these cliffs are caves - probably formed naturally by the weather, but many modified with doors or gates to become habitable.  Apparently still used as beach retreats, though of course there are no bathroom facilities.
At the end of every cove is a beach - often quite small, with unbelievably clear waters lapping the white sands.  Some of these are reasonably inaccessible - requiring a walk to access them.

There is a walk that extends around the circumference of the entire island.  We can only imagine what some of the more remote areas must hold in store for walkers.
So many times we have wished we had snorkelling gear, because the coastline - with its caves and crevices looks like it too would hold amazing treasure.  It is not hard to imagine pirates and adventure on this island!

But for us, quiet and relaxing means the children are quite settled.  After some hectic times in the lead up to this, David also enjoys the break from work and his 40th birthday retreat.
The next few days are spent in leisurely walks, beaches, eating and entertaining Millie and Indi. Naturally there is also the poolside relaxation and general home activities.
The waters of The Mediterranean have proven themselves lovely and refreshing - if chilly initially.

Some great excursions to  - a port harbour, where boating and fishing are primary industries - along with tourism. Tara's Grandparents had owned a villa at San Bou, not far from San Marco where we were staying, so we explored this area and went to the villa complex.  David and Tara were able to reminisce on their early relationship near the pool, with magnificent view over the coast then down to the village for dinner.

A drive to the top of El Toro - the highest point on the island was interesting, though on a cool and windy day we didn't stay long!  On the pinnacle at the top stands an abbey.  One cannot help but wonder if anyone other than those who lived in the abbey in early days actually attending this - as the road up was steep and windy.  Not something I would endeavour without a few horse power and a motor!

A lovely morning was spent relaxing at the beach of Cala en Turqueh.  We arrived early, so were able to really enjoy sunshine and prime beach space before more people started to arrive in the middle of the day - when we headed home.  There was a beautiful walk into this beach through the forest, and like all the other beaches we have seen in Menorca - clothes are optional.

The final few days spent in Ciutadella provided a lovely contrast. We were early for check in, so spent a couple of hours wandering around a nearby cove and headland.  The weather cleared later in the day, but due to the early wind and coolness, the beach was deserted.

Wandering through the old city, exploring amazing coves and watching resort life from our apartment was a relaxing way to spend a few days. Fabulous views of the Sea meant we also watched with interest the comings and goings of cruise ships and other vessels. And the weather cleared for us!  Beautiful, warm days to finish our time on this Spanish island.
